The proven power of play

Play-based learning is at the heart of our approach - and it works.

Children learn best when they are active, engaged and able to explore. Movement-rich play indoors and out builds communication, independence and academic foundations in a natural and meaningful way. It also supports physical development, coordination and confidence.

Global research* shows that play-based learning can accelerate early progress, particularly in language, literacy and numeracy, and at Thames, our results reflect this:

Recent Quest assessments show our Early Years pupils achieve exceptional phonics outcomes, equalling UK standards and exceeding European averages.

*Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO), EPPE Project, and Education Endowment Foundation (EEF)

Our curriculum

Our curriculum is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which includes seven key areas of learning for early childhood development.

For younger children in Nursery, our prime focus areas are communication and language, physical development and personal, social and emotional development.

In Reception, we build strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics through mainly play-based learning experiences. At this stage, we also introduce expressive arts and design and the ‘understanding the world’ areas of the EYFS curriculum.

At Thames, the Early Years experience includes 27 hours of structured learning each week, with lessons lasting 1 hour to provide deeper understanding and better preparation for starting Primary School. It is not unusual at Thames for children to already be reading by their transition to Primary.

We spend time outdoors every day because movement is crucially important to children’s physical development and overall health. We insist on appropriate clothing, so there is no such thing as bad weather!

Curriculum in action: Castle Builders

In planned activities like Castle Builders, children team up to discover, design, construct a castle together, developing essential skills in language, mathematics, and problem-solving

This fun, play-based activity offers opportunities to describe ideas, measure and balance structures, and collaborate with others, all while strengthening confidence and independence. What may look like a game is, in fact, rich, purposeful learning that lays strong academic and social foundations for future success - and can cover the whole curriculum.

  • Highly engaging, hands-on learning
  •  Encourages collaboration across ages
  •  Develops language through meaningful context
  •  Combines physical, creative, and cognitive developmen
